Casual Friday: Anchors Aweigh!

Stripes are always fresh, the perfect thing for Fridays.

The stripes on this canvas jacket are busy, so it looks best with a quiet blouse underneath. I am wearing it with a sleeveless tank in ivory lawn, but navy blue would work well, too. A patent leather tote puts this on the dressy side of the casual continuum and dark purple patent leather flats complete the look.

For the weekend, a striped canvas bag is an alternative. And though I just said that the jacket was busy and need a soothing partner, I think a striped bag works because the patterns aren’t confined in close proximity. A striped blouse would be too much.

This jacket came from JCrew a few years ago.  I think we (that’s you and I) should ask JCrew to re-issue it.

The details are fantastic. The fabric for the pockets was cut vertically for contrast — and the pockets actually drop below the bottom edge of jacket body.  It’s a terrific, graphic effect. The jacket closes with over-sized, brass hook-and-eye fastenings.  And, a trompe l’oeil collar is picked out with top-stitching.

I poked around a little on the Internet looking for a current season jacket like this one and didn’t see anything that was quite right — but trust me: white/navy, ivory/navy, and navy/white stripes are a classic combination and pop up every spring/summer. So keep your eyes peeled.
